I'm still not sure about the whole Dreamwidth thing, but I've just got one of the random Open ID invites, so I've set up a journal over there.

I'm przed there, same as here. No content there yet, but hopefully I'll at least have time to import my journal soon.

I've heard quite a bit about Dreamwidth over the past couple of days from my flist, but know extremely little about it. I'm assuming it's another journal site similar to LJ? And at the moment, only special people can open accounts? Other than that, I know nothing. Would you care to take pity on a poor brainless soul and educate them? *g*

Yep, it's yet another journaling site, using the LJ open source code. The advantage is that its terms of services look less draconian and the owners have promised to be more open in communicating with users. The fannish big names reckon it's going to be more friendly to fandom.

While I'm no fan of LJ's business practices, I reckon I'll stick to where my main fandoms (i.e. Pros) land. But I figured I should at least claim my name over there.

As for only special people being able to open an account, not so much. I just set up an Open ID username (putting a claim on my username without actually setting up an account) and then I got an invite from the site about a week later allowing me to set up during the beta. Looks like that's happening with a lot of people who set up an Open ID. (Basically Open ID allows you to comment and read, but not post.)

The site is http://dreamwidth.org if you want to take a look.

Oooh, thanks for that :)

I've registered my Open ID username too, because I don't like to feel left out *g*... erm... I mean while I doubt I'll be leaving LJ any time soon, it never harms to have backup sites waiting in the wings to fall back on if necessary, right? And if I can stake a claim to the name I want, all the better *g*

I'm uncertain about the whole thing, too, but decided to make my space over there. I haven't had time to really explore it, though. One day...

I barely have time to glance at LJ these days, so I don't imagine I'll be making a switch any time soon. But like IJ and GJ, I figured I'd at least stake my claim and see which way my main fandoms (okay, really just Pros) jump. I reckon the Pros types are mostly married to LJ.

At some point, I'll get an invite, so I can investigate :-)

You might want to set up an Open ID user. They seem to be giving out a lot of invites to people who do that.

Someone else on my Flist was posting about this. Interesting.

How do you register with Open ID?

Go to the site, click Login with Open ID, and it'll let you create your own session. A suspiciously large number of people on my flist have received invites after doing that.
