The Close Quarters Con Report
Jul. 20th, 2009 05:23 pmAs many of you on the list have already reported, Close Quarters was an amazing experience. It was like getting together with a bunch of your best friends who all share a love and appreciation of Bodie and Doyle.
justacat did a truly wonderful job of organizing the convention for maximum fun, and her loyal minion
gblvr assisted in making sure it all ran smoothly.
One of the best things with a smaller con like this was it was possibly to have lovely conversations with just about everyone there. I caught the shuttle from the airport with
sc_fossil, who is always a fun companion. My roomie was FJBryan and we spent a lot of time together talking about B&D. (I also corrupted her on the last night with a episode of Blake's 7.) It was wonderful to see
ancastar again, and meet
callistosh65 for the first time. Then there was
krisserci5,
hagsrus,
beledibabe, Kath and Glow and Flamingo and a bunch of other people I'm no doubt forgetting.
It's always great to be able to spend time with the lovely and talented
artconserv, and this time there was the added bonus of seeing the original paintings of the illustrations she was generous enough to do for Exile. I was chuffed to come home with three of them. I've got the two last blank wall spaces in my office all ready for them. (It was also a trip to finally see Exile in zine form. The printer did an awesome job and it made all the stress worthwhile.)
The panels were all fun. I helped co-mod the AU panel with
gblvr, where my primary contribution was coming up with the categories of AUs to talk about. (My personal favourite category? "Shouldn't Work But Does.")
I assisted FJBryan with the video portion of the Saturday night trivia quiz. On the downside, that meant I couldn't play, but I did get to groove on everyone else's enjoyment.
Sunday came too soon, and it was all over. I did some more corrupting by showing
msmoat a Top Gear slash vid. Then I cadged a ride to the airport with
ancastar and
callistosh65, and since I had some time before my flight left, we hit a truck stop where An and Callisto has corned beef hash and I had lemon meringue pie. (They said the experience was good research for Supernatural fic.)
justacat, you did a wonderful job, and I very much hope you are up for having another CQ again in 2011. I'm pencilling it into my schedule right now.
I should have been back at work today, but picked up a bug sometime yesterday. At the hotel my throat was sore, but I thought it was from the dry air. In the plane my nose was runny, but I thought it was from allergies. When I got home, I was ache-y, but I figured it was from lugging around two bags stuffed with zines. This morning, I woke up feeling like I'd been run over by a truck and realized that, no, I was sick. I got up for breakfast with the Sweetie and Ros (both of whom were as glad to see me as I was them) and then went back to bed for another four hours. The rest of the day was spent lounging on the couch, catching up on episodes of Merlin and Wallander.

Date: 2009-07-21 11:57 am (UTC)You are also fun to spend time with. (And thanks for the magnet. It has taken it's place on the fridge along with my other fannish trinkets.)
Hope you like the zine. It is gorgeous, isn't it?

It really has been great reading all of the con reports as it sounds like a lovely time was had by all. ♥

Date: 2009-07-21 03:48 pm (UTC)I also love lemon meringue pie, and haven't tasted any in ages. Hmm, maybe I should learn to make it! (no other lemon pie fanciers in my household, alas. One is a fruit tarts fan, two are anything-chocolate-only (except we all like carrot cake. oh well ...))

Date: 2009-07-21 03:57 pm (UTC)Lemon meringue is one of my two fave brands of pie, the other being cherry. Key lime isn't so bad either. (Clearly, I'm fond of tart flavours.) I can't abide carrot cake, though. I used to, but then I worked at a bakery one summer and made wayyyy too much of the stuff. It got into my pores after a while.
