I'd never seen it before coming to the US to do my postgrad work but was immediately captivated, watching it with my American flatmates.
I would agree that it's a better show... more complex perhaps but I have a deep affection for MFU based on very early childhood memories and my age old gut feeling that they're just meant for each other.
I didn't get that slashy connection with Kelly and Scotty but then again it's been quite a while since I've seen it.
I'm an odd slasher. I could see slash clearly when I was four years old but I didn't actually 'ship slash until about six years ago... Yeah, I know, weird and yes, I'm older than ten. :D
I never saw I Spy until about 10 years ago, when a Buffalo station across the lake started showing it at 3 a.m. on weekends. I was immediately hooked. It's more complex, more real, more based on real world politics. Not to mention the hurt/comfort and the slash. It's all there. (You really should take another look.)
Though don't get me wrong. I adore UNCLE. I love Illya and Napoleon, and yes, they're totally meant for each other. But just looking at canon, they are the worst spies. Ever. Or rather, the writers force them to do intensely idiotic things just so they can get themselves out of trouble again. It's always nice to seem them get to be the supremely competent agents we all knew they could be in the fanfic.
I'm in total agreement and yes I'll have to watch I-spy again. ND made the best picspam after I first got her to watch MFU called Possibly the Worst Spies in the World (or Damn, Boys - You're Lucky You're Pretty) (http://norfolkdumpling.livejournal.com/126707.html).

The power of a great show AND a brilliant picture. :D
