Migraines suck. A lot.

I'll be back when it doesn't feel like I've got an icepick in my eye.

Also, if anyone's had any luck with any serious migraine meds, I'd love to hear what they are. The Maxalt is only being fitfully effective these days.

I used Imtrex for years, in all its forms (nasal, injection, pill), but it stopped working for me about 2 years ago. Now I take Fioricet. Works 95% of the time if I catch it early.

Mine aren't nearly as bad as yours, but I find that if I wake up with a migraine, two cups of filter coffee, a hot shower, and two painkillers ( excedrin(sp?), ibuprofen) in quick succession often helps a lot.

I don't know if you can buy it in your country but in the UK Syndol used to work wonders for me. I think they changed it slightly a few years ago, but it's still more effective than any other over the counter painkillers.

Seconded: My exHusband uses Imtrex, works pretty well on him. He's used it off and on for ten years (whenever we could afford it, mostly!).

For me the only thing that has ever worked is Axert. They're expensive as all hell, but worth it to get rid of that icepick.

I keep meaning to say thank you so much to you again - you suggested Syndol to me a couple of years ago and it's made a ton of difference; it really works for me. Doesn't stop the pain, but at least I can carry on instead of lying on the bathroom floor moaning pathetically *g*

Thanks for the good thoughts. I'm hoping I'll kick the last of it today. It's not the pain I mind so much, it's the utter tedium of having to just lie down in a dark, quiet room and not do anything. If I could read, or write or listen to music it wouldn't be so bad. :-/

Caffeine used to totally do it for me (well, caffeine and narcotics: in university I'd down two cans of Coke and take two Tylenol 3s) but since caffeine now causes me more trouble than the migraines, that route is now closed. And even Tylenol 3s don't touch the pain any more.

I'm hoping I'm at the tail end of the bloody thing now, but I do just want it to stop.

I don't mind the pain so much any more, though it's not fun. It's the utter boredom of having to spend hours or days in a dark quiet room with a cold compress on my eyes. At least if I could read or write, I wouldn't feel like I was just wasting time.

I'll be curious to hear if your colleagues have any other suggestions. I'm going to take the list of what people are using to my doctor and try something new. (I'm wishing I got migraines like my mom at this point. She gets visual aura, which is freaky, but they last 20 minutes. I'd totally trade wacky vision for a 20 minute migraine. I'm on day 3 of this one.)

I'm so glad it did help you and you're right, it might not stop the pain (though to begin with it did for me) but it sort of numbs you enough to get through a day and the original used to knock me out for sleeping which was a good because if you slept really well it might have broken the pain-path (or whatever it's called). But I don't think the 'improved' version does so much.

For reasons I won't bore you with I'm not able to get out very easily or very often, but would you like me to pick up a box when I can and send it to you? Failing that, for speed, could you get it over the internet? We seem to be able to get most things that way. Also, just a point of interest, I've found that Syndol is stronger than any post-op painkillers we've had on prescription in the last few years.

Both of them had the same response, Relpax. They both said it acts really fast although one of them said it left her feeling a bit hungover the rest of the day but she could get up and do what needed to be done and that was good enough for her.

Oh, this reminds me: if you can afford it, acupuncture is worth a try!
My mom completely got rid of her migraines, after she had to stop her migraine meds for medical reasons. They paid for it in Germany, though.
I'm going to give it a try as soon as there is some spare change around. ;)

I get the auras, though not every time, but untreated, a migraine can last up to 5 days for me. Spent half my life in bed as a child.

Prescribing working the way it does in the UK, none of these trade names are familiar to me and migraines are something I know relatively little about, so I'm afraid I have no advice to add, but I will send a virtual Jason and Howard for a soothing massage and good wishes ♥ I hope it passes really soon *hugs again*

I actually do acupuncture every week. And for a good five years its helped with the migraines, but less so in the last few months. (I had an appointment yesterday, but unfortunately the good done by the needles was more than offset by the bad of driving into the setting sun to get to my appointment.) Otherwise, though, I totally swear by acupuncture. It's practically eliminated the near crippling back and neck pain I used to have.

Here's hoping we both find a way to get rid of the damn migraines. They are a big pile of no fun. (I'm so sorry you got them as a kid. I didn't get hit until I was 13, and even then they were relatively rare until I hit my thirties.)

Assuming the Canadian brand names match the U.S. ones, I've at least got a few new drugs to try. And in the meantime, soothing massage from virtual Jason and Howard should more than do the trick. Or perhaps they can massage each other whilst I watch. (It wouldn't help the migraine, but it would certainly take my mind off it. *g*)

In the meantime, I'm going to get my doctor to try me on a different migraine med. Can't hurt, and it might help.

Oh, I'm happy to hear it helped your back/neck ache! That's another reason I'd love to try it!
And yes, wouldn't it be great if we could all get rid of the migraines?
I inherited mine from my mom, and by age two, it was clear that I had them. Frequently!
I have to say that Relpax has made a big difference for me. Hardly any side effects and it helps quickly about 95% of the time. My doc recommended combining it with two or three regular ibuprofen.

Crikey, you were two when you started getting migraines! That's horrid. I'm thankful mine didn't kick in till a bit later.

I definitely recommend acupuncture for pain issues. It's been brilliant for me.
