So, this morning Ros is playing with her magnetic dress up prince and princess, and decides to create a lovely ensemble for the prince with one of the princess' skirts, and a crown as a tank top. Which led to this exchange...

Ros: Look, mommy!
Me: Awesome. In my opinion, more boys should wear skirts.
Ros: You only think that because you love Take That.

I don't know where she gets these ideas.

Then, on the drive home from my mom's, the Sweetie stuck on a CD of pop songs from French girl singers from the '60s, and the song Laisse tomber les filles came on.

Ros: What's this song about?
Me: The girl is telling a boy to stop dating so many girls.
Ros: Oh. And to start dating boys?
Me and the Sweetie: ::try desperately not to laugh::

Clearly, she's turning out okay.

This!

It reminds me of a kid I have in my class this year. For the first time I have a girl with two moms. She had a MELTDOWN in the room the other day so we went for a walk for her to calm down. On the way back to the room I tell her, "I still need to call your mom and tell her about your behavior."

She says, "Which one?"

I say, "Well, kicking the desk over and over for sure, probably also the screaming at adults."

She just sighs and says, "Not which BEHAVIOR. Which MOM?"

Oh. :)

She's not turning out okay, she's turning out unbefuckinglievably awesome!

Well done, you two! (And only with a little help from some British manband friendlies...*g*)

Seriously, this brightened up my Monday morning BIG TIME, I'm sitting in my office, first cup of coffee, thinking "why is it Monday already, why?" and then THIS! BANG! Smile on my face!

Thank you! And thank Ros! ♥

It's my ambition to raise a kid without any homophobia or silly assumptions about gender. So far that's mostly working out. (Although she's suddenly developed an aversion to all things pirate because "that's a boy thing." ::sigh:: Apparently this is the age where they, hopefully briefly, become rather rigid about gender roles in some ways.)

So glad we could brighten up your day.

And you're doing so very well! I'm sure this pirate aversion is only a brief phase. It must be. Yes. *nods* Have you read her Pippi Longstocking yet? Is it too early for that?

Date: 2012-05-14 04:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com
I hope the pirate aversion is brief. We've got tickets to see The Pirates of Penzance at Stratford (Ontario) in the fall, and she's already informed us that she's staying in the hotel. (She's soooo not staying in the hotel, but I'm praying there's no temper tantrum involved getting her to the theatre.)

Haven't got to Pippi Longstocking yet. It's not big here, so it'll probably take some tracking down (which we've already discussed doing) but I suspect it'll be a year or two until she's up for it.

She's informed us she's staying in the hotel...oi! *g* Reminds me, while we were on the ferry to our holiday island we met a little boy (a bit younger than Ros, though), who unlike all other kids (they generally LOVE being on ships, with the sea and the birds and all) didn't like it there and he informed his parents that he'd rather wanted to be home and that he hated it there. It was quite heart-breaking. We met him the next day on the beach, happily building a sand castle with his dad. No sign of "I hate it here" whatsoever. Oh, to be a kid again... Fingers crossed for Ros changing her mind soon, so no tantrums have to be fought.

Basically everything Astrid Lindgren wrote is wonderful - she was one modern woman, way ahead of her time! I adored all her books, Pippi, Madita and especial Michel, who is called Emil in Swedish. And that's just the tip of the iceberg! She's written so many wonderful stories! It's a bit too early for Ros, I reckon, but if you need some help in tracking the books I could have an eye out here, it's probably easier to find copies in English here in Europe. Just let me know!

You'll be pleased to hear I started my research - I spent the whole lunch break reading through all kinds of circus-related Wikipedia articles, noting all important vocabulary (Fire eating! Knife throwing! Aerial silk! Stilts! Chapeaugraphy! (Guess who will be brilliant at this??) Awwww!). Momentarily I'm downloading an album of circus music. I'm quite loving this... *g*

I'm just fighting to finish the last bits of packing before I crash, but I did want to say YAY RESEARCH! I love doing the research on a story, and it sounds like you'll have lots of interesting details to add to this story. \o/

Hooray for packing! I just saw on tumblr that Markie and Gary visiting a theme park popped up just in time! Awwwww!

Just in case we don't "hear" each other anymore before you leave: have a really good time, hope you have time to relax and enjoy (and write) and that all goes well and that Ros really really enjoys it all! And safe journey! I'll miss you! ::BIG HUGS::

I just had to reblog the Markie and Gary visit to a theme park!

I'm packed up and ready to leave after work. As soon as I pick up the uniforms for my team, drop off Ros' martial arts homework, and put a couple of letters in the post, that is.

Thanks for the holiday wishes! I'm sure it'll be fun, and I'll tell you all about it when I get back, if not before. (We figure we'll splurge and pay for wi-fi at the resort.)

::BIG HUGS BACK::

School/peer groups will probably make for some rigidity in her future opinions from time to time but you've clearly started her off the right way so she should turn out well! Congratulations!

From: [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com
Well, she's already got a few friends with two mommies or two daddies, and her school is very careful to be inclusive of all families, so I'm hoping the peer group thing won't veer into gender issues/homophobia any time soon. Or ever. But yeah, she's off to a good start. :D

Ah, naughty nurse, a classic.

The TT story points to how observant your daughter is and the French song demonstrate how logical she is. *nods*

I was hoping to do a whole Howard in skirts pic spam (the boy does like to wear skirts on stage) but his naughty nurse was the only pic I could find on short notice.

She hasn't even seen Howard's cross-dressing, just heard me mention it, so she's clearly paying close attention. And yep, she's always trying to figure out a logical explanation for things.

Hee, that pic made me glee :) Way to go, Ros! My girl's favourite song on the new Rufus album is the one about his baby daughter coming to visit her two dads when she's grown up (and finding one of them wearing a kimono) *G*

I love that it's Howard who always ends up in drag. And I love his attempt at a naughty nurse. (I also love, and am terrified by how closely Ros is clearly paying attention.)

And your comment reminds me that I haven't got the new Rufus album yet! Bad Zed!

Howard's outfit is precious - the nurse's hat and boots especially *g*

(FWIW I like the new Rufus album a lot more than the last two - and gah I've missed out on tickets for the London shows so am miffed.)

The boots are crazy. I'm sort of fond of his sad attempt at makeup. And the fact that he didn't take it off after his appearance and there's documentary footage of him wandering around backstage in jeans, a t-shirt, and blush.

I suspect I'll like the new album more than the last. The last one wasn't bad , but it was a bit on the glum side, understandably, and a tough listen. He's doing a free concert here in a few weeks--he's moved to Toronto!--but there are no reserved tickets and I suspect that the line up will be insane. I might give it a go, though.

Oooh, I do like that picture of Howard *g* And yes, Ros is clearly turning out excellently - Take That do I think, in all seriousness, make a great example of how men can be comfortable playing with gender roles and also massively famous/successful/hordes of screaming fans etc!

I love Howard in the nurse's outfit. It's all part of what makes him so fascinating, this butch-looking guy who's all for wearing skirts, gets giggly when talking about playing gay clubs, and apparently gets weepy more than any of them.

Take That are awesome role models when it comes to gender roles. I'm really hoping Ros continues to like them and I can take her to their next tour. (I'm already scoping out where to get kid-sized ear defenders.)

Both incidents made me smile, but the second one also made me hopeful for a lot of things being significantly better for Ros' generation. Just the matter of fact assumption that boys dating boys is a reasonable option is a wonderful thing.
