Fannish Goodness

After fighting wicked writer's block and general fannish ennui for the last few months, I've finally had a rather good week when it comes to fannish endeavours. I have:

1. Started and finished a new TT story. And not just finished it, but finished it well. It's one of the few times that I've felt the story does exactly what I wanted it to do, though it did take a couple of runs at a key scene to get it there. (Thanks draycevixen for noting the "loss of voice" square on my hc_bingo card. It was apparently just the prompt I needed.)

2. Started a new Pros vid with an eye to finishing it in time for BistoCon. I'm currently in the Clip Organizing Death March portion of the creative process, but it's definitely satisfying to be vidding again. And especially satisfying to be vidding the lads. It's made me remember how much I love them all over again.

3. Started to consider going to SHareCon. I hadn't even considered it because I didn't think it was fair to the Sweetie to take off on him for three cons this year. But he was poking around on my LJ (he does that occasionally) and noticed I'd mentioned I wasn't going to the con, he said "why not?" So I've started pricing flights to Baltimore.

Also, looking at footage of Doyle and considering my very favourite picture of Mark Owen has set me wondering if perhaps my affection for Mark isn't quite the anomaly I thought it was.


Hmmmm.

It's nice to get things done instead of staring at the same freaking paragraph for weeks on end and trying to figure out what's wrong with it. Although, I think a good chunk of that was my brain going "Can we vid now? We really want to vid."

It's definitely nice getting back to vidding and to Pros. It's brought all those warm and fuzzy feelings back!

Mark doesn't always, or even usually, look like that, but that is very much my favourite pic of him, and looking at the footage from The Rack I had a sudden revelation as to why.

I've finished a first draft of the Pros vid, and am looking for someone to beta it. (My previous betas are mostly out of the fandom.) You've got a very good visual eye, and I was wondering if you'd take a look. (I'm looking for anything from a general sense if it works to comments on any specific clips do or don't work.)

I'll take a look for you but I'd better warn you that I have no technical sense whatsoever and know very little about vidding, so it would be a very general observation! (assuming I can open it in the first place, I've never had much success with opening some vids..)

I'm less interested in the technical side than if you think there's a character/narrative arc that holds together, and if there are any shots where you think "why the heck did she put that one there?"

Pros vid! For some reason I haven't seen any 'new' Pros vids for years, not since media cannibals days, I think. Has the vidding style changed as fandom's evolved, do you think? Not just tech, but the story/style?

There are some new Pro vids getting produced, though I'm no expert on how things are evolving these days. I always was a feral vidder, and that's become more pronounced since I'm not actually doing much vidding at all anymore.

Ah,around my neck of the woods we currently use feral when we talk about our kids behaving badly, with the wider context of it being associated with bogan behaviour (urban dictionary describes bogans amusingly - http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bogan)

My excuse is I was too busy obsessing over what the heck I could do with the forced soulbonding square. At least I recognized how perfect it was when you mentioned it. *g*

I think I just needed to listen to my brain and switch to vidding from writing to get things flowing again. And SHareCon isn't a done deal (I was also hoping for a family trip to NYC and I haven't discussed the when or if of that with the Sweetie yet.) But I'm definitely a step closer.

I would never have put Doyle and Markie in the same box, but there is a definite something in those pics...

Well, the story's up on AO3 (http://archiveofourown.org/works/1905435). I'll be posting links on LJ and possibly Tumblr later today. (Still not too sure about posting fic on Tumblr, but the fandom does seem to have moved there wholesale.)

It's the combination of cheekbones and hair, I think. (That is absolutely my favourite picture of Mark. I think he's at his most beautiful on the Patience shoot.)

I wouldn't call an affection for Cumberbatch weird. But then, I share it. *g* (If you haven't seen it, Stuart: A Life Backwards is an excellent non-Sherlock movie he did with Tom Hardy. It's not high profile, but I think it's one of the best things he's done.)

Thanks for recommending Stuart: A Life Backwards - that one is definitely on my list of films to see. I have seen quite a lot of Benedict's work in the past, but he never got to me. I quite liked him in Tinker Tailor, but then I liked most of the other members of the cast better nonetheless. I disliked him as Sherlock for a very long time, until I found my way into the fandom through fanfiction (when is it ever anything else for me, anyway?) and all of a sudden, I started to like Benedict. After all these years. That's why I called my affection weird. But then that's what I call my little thing for Jason too. ;-)

I'm frustrated by Tumblr's inadequacies (the inability to have sustained discussions; the difficulty of doing long commentary on picture posts) but it seems to be the way fandom has gone. Alas.

I'd seen Benedict in a few smaller roles, in Amazing Grace and Starter for 10, and had marked him as someone interesting to watch, and fell for his Sherlock immediately. Though I've held out against the fanfic. I've got too little time to get involved with such a mega-fandom.

Your experience sounds more like my Sweetie's. He's taken a violent dislike to Benedict, has refused to watch Sherlock until recently, and then didn't like it, and is adamant that everyone else in Tinker Tailor was much better. (Well, I have to agree with him and you on that last point. I mean, look at who he's acting against! You can not be as good as Gary Oldman and still be a damn fine actor. *g*)

So glad you're on a roll, that's wonderful, and I hope you can make SHarecon. We'd love to have you but I totally understand trying to juggle everything. I've got two more trips than I usually take this summer which has made things interesting but I'm grateful it's all working out.

Here's hoping I can sustain this creativity. For a little while at least. (The vidding, at least, is going well. So far. I can't help but add qualifiers.) And I am hoping to make SHareCon. I think the only stumbling block would be our possible family weekend in NYC, but we'll see.
