So Tired, Yet Again

My last post was a whinge about being tired. Consider this a continuation, but with an added chemical component.

I think I'm still recovering from the rush of getting ready for and then getting through BistoCon, because I've barely felt the urge to get on the computer, let alone post or write or anything else. It feels sort of the like ennui that hits at the end of finishing a particularly long story or a particularly difficult vid, except with that sort of ennui there's a part of my brain that's champing at the bit to just get on with things. This time I'm just aware of the need to give myself some time.

But that's not entirely why I'm so tired today. This tiredness is connected to a stupid/weird thing that happened today.

It's day four of the Toronto International Film Festival (which hopefully I'll find time and energy to post about soon because I've seen some brilliant stuff) and I was waiting for a movie today with a friend. Since it was a noon film, I'd grabbed a bagel to munch on in line. Unfortunately, a wasp took a liking to my bagel as I was eating. Even more unfortunately, the idiotic insect then proceeded to fly into my mouth and sting me! (The sensation was like this: why is there something fluttery-feeling on my lip? OWWWW!)

After I spat out the offending beastie, I immediately took a half dose of Benedryl. The Benedryl seems to have kept the worst of the swelling down, but as it always does with me, it's also made me slightly stupid and exhausted all day. And the side of my mouth that got stung feels sore all the way to the bone, rather like it's had venom injected into it.

Stupid insect.

After this, I rather feel the universe owes me a film fest random-running-into of Benedict Cumberbatch or Viggo Mortensen. ;-)

Ow! Yes, and that is exactly how Benedryl makes a person feel. Glad you didn't have any really bad adverse reactions.

Oh, finished the zine Whisper to a kill--the beginning was really intriguing, the ending a let down. somewhere in the middle the story was lost. Can't wait to try the other two zines I got at Bistocon.

If I take a full dose of Benedryl, I'm out within 15 minutes, and stay out for 18 hours. Since the film we were seeing was one of my top picks, I took a half dose and kept my fingers crossed that I could stay awake and didn't have a serious allergic reaction to the sting. (I have serious random allergic reactions a couple of times a year, these days to, I kid you not, cardio exercise, so I always have Benedryl and an Epi-pen on me.)

Whisper is definitely one of those zines with a better set-up than follow through.

Hi there!

Have you not encountered the story before? How brilliant to meet it with all the lovely artwork attached. I agree. The beginning is fascinating, and then I wasn't so keen on the middle section (not always in the mood for a particular trope that crops up in it) or the ending (setting isn't one I like).

But I love the scene with the threesome. It's apparently pretty memorable (http://prosfinder.livejournal.com/86569.html) :)

After the first twenty pages or so, I thought the whole zine derailed. I also got Arabian Nights and Angel in the Dark. I'd only read two other Pros zines before that--too busy writing my own stuff, I guess.

I have read what I imagine is a circuit version of the beginning of Whisper of a Kill, which gets to the end of the scene of the assassin and then stops with 'to be continued HEE HEE HEE'. :)

Arabian Nights and Angel In The Dark make an interesting contrast with each other. I had better not say any more! Enjoy!

The fest is brilliant. The wasp attack was less so. But it has passed, and all I'm left with is a slightly tender part of my mouth. And I will now be very, very careful when eating al fresco with wasps around. ::frowns sternly at the wasps in my garden::

Please take a rest more! I read many report of BistoCon which said it was huge success! There is no wonder you're tired!

It was not my favourite experience ever, but I seem to have come through it without too much damage. And the film fest is going swimmingly. Tomorrow is my four film day, so fingers crossed I survive that one.

BistoCon did go really well. Next time we're definitely going to recruit a few more con comm members though. (And I do hope you'll be able to come next time!)

Oh dear lord, wasp sting in the mouth, that's pants :( Not surprised you feel poisoned. I hope that goes away soon and the Film Fest goes on being fab. Yes, and I reckon you have good reason to feel drained, too, after organizing a successful con. Take it easy!

But my mouth seems mostly fine now, and the fest is pretty fab and only half way through, so it's all good.

I wasn't expecting to be quite so drained by the con--it pretty much went off without a hitch--but there you have it. I'm pretty much giving myself permission to not worry about doing anything for the moment. Apart from the usual keeping things going sorts of things, of course.

I have the same reaction to Benedryl, or anything like it, so I totally understand your dilemma about the film fest. I am glad you made it through, and here's to getting it our of your system as quickly as possible. Also, that insect-related pain goes away quickly!

I reckon it was a very stupid wasp. And I hope it didn't survive the encounter. (I was too shocked to stomp on the silly thing when I spat it out and it crawled sheepishly off.)

The Benedryl thing was tricky. I knew if I took a full dose I'd be out for the day, but I didn't want to take nothing and then have my body go berserk with the sting. It all worked out for the best.

Fingers crossed on the Mortensen and Cumberbatch encounter. *g* (At the bare minimum I'll get to see Viggo on stage. I'm seeing both the films he's in, and he's usually very good about going to all the screenings and doing Q&As.)

I am now feeling very lucky - a wasp decided to nvestigate the inner side of my glasses but for some reason failed to sting when I flailed and got them off.

You get a lots of wasps trying to bogart your bagels around your neck of the woods?

Are you allergic, or is that the normal level of reaction to your local wasps.

We tend to give wasps a clear berth around here. Actually this reminds me of being in Germany and making my host come inspect a large flying bug near me and she was like ?? I explained to her that in Australia we like to make sure any insect aren't going to kill us to death. Oh, hey, I just made this about me, oops.

I do hope you are feeling better and that life brings you a bounty of Benedict Cumberbatch joy.

August and September tend to be wasp season around here. They've only got a month to get enough food to get their queens through the winter and they get very aggressive. The Sweetie's boss had a wasp get in his sock last week as he was mowing the lawn and it stung the heck out of his foot. He couldn't walk for a couple of days. But my reaction was just to the sting, and not (yet) an allergic reaction. Although apparently once you've been stung you've got a 1 in 6 chance of developing a serious allergy. Joy!

Your story in Germany reminds me of a friend from Arizona who arrived in Wisconsin to study whilst I was doing grad work there. When she arrived, she asked quite reasonably what the local venomous snakes and insects were that she needed to avoid. In Arizona, that's a real issue. In Wisconsin, not so much.

Awww, I'm sorry to tease like that. If it makes you feel any better, I saw the crowds (and I do mean crowds!) of people waiting to see Cumberbatch coming out of a screening last night, but didn't see even a hair on his actual head.
