The Sweetie's worst nightmare has been confirmed: Benedict Cumberbatch is playing Doctor Strange.

Sweetie: I don't want Cumberbatch playing Doctor Strange! I'd rather they cast Howard Donald!

Ladies and gentlemen, Howard Donald exhibiting his considerable talents:

Oh, Howard.

I agree with Sweetie. No BC as Dr. Strange.

He'll be happy to hear he has company.

Well, that's 2 Marvel movies I don't need to bother with. *sigh*

The Sweetie is especially bitter because a Doctor Strange movie is one of the few Marvel movies he'd want to bother with. Poor boy.

What Doctor Strange movie? I heard they decided to cancel production... ;)

I am so mad over this casting. So mad.

The Sweetie is more sad than mad. Either way, he's not at all happy.

Man, and I'd almost managed to forget about that bit of casting news. NOOOOOO.

I have no reaction to the BC thing other than he seems in serious danger of over-saturating the market, and if his Dr Strange is anything like his Khan (*grrrr*) he'll be playing Sherlock in a different costume.

What I'm really here for is that mesmerising gif. Boy's got skillz. *stares* (I also like Mark watching and giving a little shimmy in solidarity *g*)

I'm fond of BC (I'm coming over to see him in Hamlet, after all) but he is definitely in danger of becoming overexposed. And I do think he needs to be a bit more strategic in picking his roles.

But that gif is mesmerizing, ain't it? The full clip is adorable because he's a bit tentative at first, but as soon as he realizes he's got it nailed he really starts working it. And Mark watching Howard is pretty much always a lovely thing. *g*

I am strangely indifferent to the casting news which is not like me at all.

I suppose he is one of the Marvel characters I know very little about so I don't feel like I know enough to comment and say if I think it is good or bad. However I have been reading all the reasons why a good number of people are against the news to understand the reaction.

I'm mostly unmoved by the news because Doctor Strange is a character I only know because the Sweetie is always quoting his dorkier lines and therefore I have no emotional investment in any of it.

Unlike the Sweetie, who is massively upset because Strange is a character he adores, and would a Strange movie would have been the only MCU movie he'd have been enthusiastically interested in, except now not so much. Poor boy.

I can't say I know much about Doctor Strange, but I can't help but feel like this casting has been made more on the basis that BC is "flavour of the month" at the moment...

But really I'm just here for that GIF. I agree with Jason - Howard must've been a stripper in a previous life. HIPS DON'T LIE.

Cumberbatch certainly seems to be the go to answer for any prominent casting at the moment.

This post really was just an excuse for that gif. And yeah, Jason was totally right. LOOK AT THOSE HIPS!

Poor Don! Though I'm not into that particular fandom, I know it sucks when they mis-cast. Whom would he have liked to play the part?

And Howard, yes. Never grow up, lad... :)

Apart from Howard, I think he'd have been at least content with anyone else. Though he did through Nick Cave out as a wacky possibility.

Howard is one of the wonders of the internet, as far as I'm concerned. *g*

Nick Cave would have been a clever choice, I suppose... I just had to google the looks of Dr Strange and apart from the actual Stan-Lee-drawings there were montages with Liam Neeson (!!!), Johnny Depp, and (my personal favourite) Joseph Fiennes. You can tell the sweetie it could be worse than BC. :D
Thinking about it...Chad Kroeger would be great in that role, no?? *evil cackle*

You know, I'm kinda glad The Donald's back to work - his twitter doesn't always benefit from his boredom. And, no, I think he should stick to his day job and not try acting...you know it never works when super heroes play super heroes... *G*

Now if only I could find out how to use my user pics in the LJ app...le sigh...

Dr Strange is one of the few branches of the Marvel verse I've really never read, so I'm basically ambivalent about BC as Strange, but I do worry about the overexposure thing. For his workload as much as anything. But then I suppose less famous actors work all the time and one's just less aware of it. I hope it's a good film, anyway.

I know nothing about Dr. Strange apart from what I've gleaned from living with the Sweetie. I'm remaining agnostic on whether BC is a good choice or not, though it does seem we're living in a period where "cast Benedict Cumberbatch!" is the default response to any casting challenge. And that isn't always a good thing.

I do rather like him as a performer, and just hope he manages a sustainable career, not a flash-in-the-pan one.
