Yesterday was the first serious test for my black belt: four hours, covering fitness, sparring, forms, weapons and self-defence. My main goals for the test were not mucking it up, and not getting injured.

I didn't quite manage that second goal.

It mostly went well. I got through the fitness section, did well in sparring (earning surprised respect from one of the younger whipper snapper black belts I managed to hold my own against), and did all my forms solidly with only a few glitches.

Then we got to self-defence, always my bĂȘte noire. They started us off with simple shoulder rolls from the ground. Which I shouldn't have even attempted. (I don't do break falls or take downs any more, since there's a high probably of a serious back or neck injury if I do.) But I was feeling cocky, and I thought "it's just a little shoulder roll. How bad can it be?"

Pretty bad, it turns out. Though not nearly as bad as it could have been.

I got out of alignment on the first roll, landed badly, and wrenched something in my shoulder. It took a while before they could get me up off the floor, and then one of our instructors taped up my arm so it wouldn't jar, one of the school's office staff escorted me to Emergency to have it checked out, and another instructor drove my car home.

The ER doctor was a bit taken aback at my x-ray (that shoulder got completely rebuilt when I was three, so even with no injury it's a bit of a mess) but he reckons it's a separated shoulder with an associated sprained ligament. They gave me a sling, and have referred me to the orthopaedic clinic at the hospital, who I've been assured will call within two days.

A quick search on the Mayo clinic site shows it's not the worst injury to have, and they mostly heal within 2 to 3 weeks as long as you haven't ruptured a ligament. But for a few days at least, I'm going to have to a lot one handed. (This is my first foray into typing, which isn't going too badly, but I wouldn't want to be on the computer for long.)

Hopefully, this has knocked the last of my stupid pride about not being able to do certain things during training. Rolls are now officially on the no fly list, along with all the other ground work stuff.

The one silver lining to this particular cloud is that I'm going to take a day or two off work to get to the point where moving wrong and sneezing don't cause eye-watering agony, and that means a couple of days of watching TV and movies. Which I haven't done in months! Yay for silver linings!

Ow, sweetie! I'm glad you see a silver lining, but ow. And let's be careful out there.

Yep, definitely an ow. It's getting better, but wow, does it hurt to laugh.

I'm really sorry you've injured yourself and wish you a speedy recovery. ♥

Thanks. The pain is gradually easing up.

I'll assume virtual hugs won't hurt so have lots!!

Dear me, you don't really take care of yourself, do you!! *g*

What was the outcome of the test? Or was it completely wiped off the record?

Virtual hugs are appreciated. Hugs back!

I've always had a bit of a stubborn streak when it comes to pushing the boundaries of what I can do. I really need to pull back on that now. :(

Up until the injury, I think I was doing quite well on the test, so I'll be moving forward. Once I get the shoulder sorted. I've just got to figure out how not to completely lose my conditioning whilst not buggering the shoulder up worse. And we're got a tournament on Feb. 27 that I don't know if I'll be ready to compete in. I was quite looking forward to that. Ah, well.

Ouch. Poor you. Be careful!

I'm glad to hear you can see the silver lining.

I hope the recovery goes well.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to getting some guidance on how much I can do, and how much I need to hold back. For the moment I'm quite happy to take it easy.

Yikes! That sounds horrible, don't do that again. ;)

Definitely not doing that again. ;)

Ouch ouch ouch I was flinching when I read this, can't imagine how sore it must be for you. Take care, take things easy (what a good excuse to curl up with a book and the tv remote!).

The soreness is taking interesting turns. The shoulder is hurting less, but the muscles in my chest, which I seem to have torn as well, are hurting more.

The TV remote will be my best friend. Annoyingly, it rather hurts to hold a book. (And to be on the computer for any length of time.) I may have to pull out the ereader.

Eeep! So sorry to hear that. Hope you get well soon, but, on the other hand, don't rush the recovery! Take it as slowly as it needs.

It's always a delicate balance, working to get everything back in shape, but not so hard that you bugger it up again. Fingers crossed I get the balance right.

All power to you for finding the silver lining, but oh bloody hell *hugs gently* I hope it is fairly straightforward and not too painful - very wise to take time off. I hope you've got some stuff to watch that's enough to take your mind off the pain - certain bits of certain TT concerts spring to mind *g* ♥

I am an idiot for doing the shoulder roll, but at least I now have definitive proof that I shouldn't do that again. And, as an added bonus, all the bright young thing black belt instructors at our school have now what it takes to injure me. Which means they're less likely to pull a really horrible attack on me during the final Power Weekend test that is liable to injure me again. (Occasional sneak attacks during that weekend are apparently part of the process, and I always get nervous when I haven't given my training partners explicit instructions on what they can and can't do with me.)

I have a TON of things to watch. I'm currently getting caught up on The Bean's series, Legends (which got quite good in its second, and unfortunately last, season) but I have definite plans to watch some TT. I haven't watched LBDS since Jason left and am feeling the somewhat masochistic urge. I may even throw some Hannibal into the mix.

Well I'm certainly nodding for all those plans *g* I hope you can try some Hannibal and enjoy it - 1x07 and 1x08 remain my suggestion for standalone with high queer and not-that-bad gore (there is some, but the distress element is not high, if that makes sense?)

I watched LBDS quite recently. It really is a beautiful little film in the objective sense (and the subjective sense, heh). I'm still watching the DVD of 'Live 2015' very regularly - remains my favourite of their albums so far, which is good really *g*

OMG, I just realized I haven't watch the Live 2015 DVD all the way through yet! Which shows how crazy busy I've been of late. Well, that's my morning sorted.

Skipping ahead to Hannibal 1x07 and 1x08 sounds like a good plan to me. I'll put that in the queue for after I've finished Legends.

Holy Crapoly, missus! That sounds very painful and unpleasant indeed. Oooof... just reading about it made me cringe. I hope it heals up good and quick.

It was...not fun. Now I'm playing with what I have to do to relax the muscle around the sprained ligament so it isn't further stressed. Harder than it sounds. I find I'm checking in with my shoulder every minute or so and relaxing the muscles yet again.

Fingers crossed it's a quick heal.

Oh man! Ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch!!

I hope your shoulder heals quickly! And in the meantime, have a blast with your tv watching. Lie around, chill out, take a break... Get the family to fetch and carry for you... :)

Take care and get better soon!

I'm hoping for quick healing, too. The TV watching has been fun and all, but I'll be happy to get active again.
