Award Musings
Jun. 30th, 2004 08:54 pmI noticed that
bluespirit_star posted that the SCREWZ award winners had been posted, so I figured I'd amble over and check 'em out. And found out that I actually managed to win two of the crazy things, one for my U.N.C.L.E. story, Prodigal's Return (in Relative Secrecy 7) and one for my Wild Wild West story, The Night of the Opium Den (in Gentlemen Never Tell 7) For those keeping score, both also won Fan Qs this year.
Here's the interesting thing. Prodigal's Return has no sex in it, not even a hint. There are thousands of miles between Illya and Napoleon in the story, physically and emotionally. Though it's part of an ongoing series where they will, eventually, end up together, they're certainly not together in this story. And yet it's winning slash awards. Interesting. (I'm sure this is also part of the reason why I'm accused by certain people of writing so-called "genslash". To which I would respond that while I don't always feel the need to write sex scenes, sometimes I have a great deal of fun with them.)
Anyway, for those wanting to see the full list of winners, you can find them here:

Congrats to
bluespirit_star, for her win for Pros Artwork,
stormheller for her win for Due South novella, and
walfox for her win for Miscellaneous (X-Files) Story. Not to mention
graculus for both U.N.C.L.E. and Wild Wild West novella.

Date: 2004-07-01 08:29 am (UTC)Genslash is such an awful term. To me, it seems that all it does is belittle the user. But then, I'm the strange genner wandering in slash land.
I am very glad though, that there are writers and readers who like a combo of slash and other situations.
After all the slams on the list, which finally developed the genslash term, I started wondering - if slash is about relationship as well as sex, how can a relationship develop without external stimulus? I mean, doesn't relationship slash almost require other people and situations in a story for the relationship to develop?

It seems to imply that anyone who has the label applied to them is not really writing slash, which I find irksome. Slash is not a single set of writing practices. It's a multiplicity, each of which is as valid as the other, be it a PWP or a plot driven story.
I also definitely want to see my pair interact with other people, not just each other. I like creating OCs, and I love working with other canonical characters.
As for the genner/slasher thing, I pretty much started as a gen fan, consider myself a slasher now, but will ready anything in my fandoms that I consider good writing.
