Day 6

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

I've been mulling this over all day, and it's a hard one. Because frequently I don't know what I want until I see it. But here are a few things.

1. Recs for Marvel Steampunk AU stories. Stucky is my main pairing, but as long as Bucky and/or Steve is involved, I'm probably going to love it.

1a. Or if anyone has a Steampunk prompt they'd like to lay on me, I'd love to give one a shot.

1b. Or, ya know, if anyone wanted to write me a Marvel Steampunk AU, that would totally be above and beyond the call.

2. Research resources for the Pacific theatre of World War II. I'm determined to write the sequel to Gweilo Gongfu where I send Steve and Bucky to the Pacific theatre, and I'm in the research accumulation phase. I know far more about the European theatre, so if you've got anything on the Pacific, I'd love to hear about it. I also need information about Chinese Americans serving in the U.S. military during the war.

That sounds awesome. I hope someone steps up for you. I'd love to read those too.

For the Pacific theatre I know mostly novels/memoirs about POWs, and they're mostly English. 'King Rat' by James Clavell, 'Empire of the Sun' by JG Ballard, the TV show 'Tenko' etc, and also various books/movies demonstrating the impact of the Japanese invasion in China. I think you've watched the HBO The Pacific show? A tie-in book 'making of the series' might be a good kick off point?

Here via the [profile] fandom_snowflake comments. I would also add that the memoirs that The Pacific is in part based on--Helmet for My Pillow by Robert Leckie and With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa by Eugene Sledge--are very interesting and have lots of on-the-ground details that I always find useful as a fic-writer. Obviously they're very specific to these two men's experiences, and they're both Marines rather than Army, but they're very possibly worth looking into nonetheless.

I'd rec is Codetalker by Chester Nez. It was really good. Talked a lot about living conditions of the Marines when they were island hopping in the Pacific. Plus all the code stuff was cool.

muccamukk: Peggy Carter wearing a leather jacket, holding a gun and looking like she means business. (Cap: Agent 13)

Obviously no one is Chinese, but Nez does talk about being non-white and even with being confused with the Japanese, if that's at all helpful.

(I think if you're reading about the Pacific Theatre, you're probably made of fairly stern stuff, but the early parts of the book are about residential schools and include A LOT of animal harm.)
