Zed, the Hockey Player

I have somehow, in the last three years, become a hockey player.

Well, it's not a total mystery. I started taking lessons so I could help out with my daughter's team, and then discovered that it was fun. And this year I figured I was good enough after two years of lessons that I'd join our clubs senior women's league.

And being in the league, meant that this year I got my very own hockey picture!




The jersey is wrong, since the week after pictures were taken I got traded. My original team was last in the standings and I was officially the worst player on the team. But I'm getting better! Some of the new women in the learn-to-play classes told me I'm really good (I'm not, but it was nice to hear) and I can now keep up with some of the players who used to regularly leave me in the dust, so yay!

It's a trip learning a new physical skill in your 50s, but I am definitely having a fabulous time!

So what's the name of your current team?

It's kinda crazy, but fun.

My current team has gold jerseys, so they picked the name Gold Rush. The team manager even made a magnetic, glittery sign we could put on the dressing room door. Sports meets crafts!

You’ve got plenty of energy! And it’s a lot of enlightened self interest on my part. If I stay active, I’ve got more energy, and if I keep in shape, my back hurts less. So it’s win win!

Doing something you love makes it easier to keep at it when the going is tough. (Some day I will manage back crossovers, but it’s probably not going to be this season.)

I think it's wonderful that you're playing hockey and I'm so glad you like it. Had no idea that leagues like that traded players but you look great in your gear.

I still can’t quite believe I’m playing, but I am having a blast. Our league does trades to keep the teams reasonably even so there isn’t one team always getting blown out. I think playing with the new team has upped my game, but I do miss my old teammates.

I used to be one of the only Canadians I knew who didn't care about hockey, and one of the few Torontonians who didn't give a toss about the Maple Leafs, our NHL team. Now I love playing and shout at the TV when watching the Leafs play, and my (non-sporty) husband is left wondering what aliens have brainswapped his wife. ;-)

I try! Though the Sweetie thinks it's hysterical that I now shout at the TV whilst watching Hockey Night in Canada instead of falling asleep in front of it. :D
