After [livejournal.com profile] ancastar posted an illustrated version, I couldn't resist. So here is my 10 Fictional Characters I Wouldn't Kick Out of Bed list:

1. Ray Doyle. As if there was ever any doubt he'd make the top of my list. Scrappy, scruffy, good with a gun and absolutely gorgeous.

2. Boromir. He's tragic, doomed, scruffy and has a big sword. And played by Sean Bean. What's not to like.

3. Richard Sharpe. If Bernard Cornwell had set out to write the perfect character for me, Pauline Zed, he could not have done a better job. (Highly competent, scruffy, problem with authority, extremely loyal and, oh yeah, has a big sword. Yes, please!) Not to mention here's that Bean fellow again.

4. Spock. The intelligent, aloof outsider. Always a favourite archetype of mine. And quite possibly my very first crush.

5. Vila Restal. He might be cowardly, alcoholic and venal, but he's also brave, loyal and extremely competent. Vila's a mass of contradictions that I cannot resist.

(I toyed with including my other Blake's 7 fave, Kerr Avon, but as I always told my grad school pals, I want to be Avon, I don't want to do Avon. Still, here's a pic, just because.

6. Illya Kuryakin. In the mold of Spock, intelligent and slightly aloof. Also, highly sarcastic, which I can totally appreciate.

7. Athos. Smart, cynical and extremely good with a sword.

8. Rawhide. Buckaroo Banzai's second in command and the archetypal laconic cowboy. I've followed Clancy Brown's career ever since.

9. Teyla Emmagan. Because none of these lists is complete without a girl crush, and Teyla would be mine. Seriously, just look at her.

10. Diego Alatriste. Competent? Check. Scruffy? Check. Has own sword and knows what to do with it? Check. Loyal? Absolutely. And as a bonus, played by the always delicious Viggo Mortensen.

Wow. Sarcastic and/or scruffy and/or aloof. Apparently (except for Teyla) you and I were separated at birth. For SGA my taste runs more to Zelenka, aka Illya Kuryakin's weird Czech nephew, though I wouldn't shove Ronon out of bed for eating crackers.

Also - Vila doesn't do it for me, but yes, yes, yes, I AM Kerr Avon.

(Miss you! Are you coming to con.txt?)

And competent! Don't forget competent!

Also, I would totally expect you to have such fabulous taste. *g*

Oooh, I'd forgotten Zelenka. I'd totally do him. (He is rather like Illya's weird Czech nephew, isn't he?) I'm not sure about Ronon, though. He's pretty and all, but he so clearly thinks Sheppard is his boyfriend. (Mind you, everyone on that show thinks Sheppard is their boyfriend. It's what makes it so much fun.)

Miss you too! Alas, I won't be at con.txt. MediaWest is probably going to be my only con this year, unless something comes up later that looks doable. I will, however, be at Close Quarters next year, come hell or high water.

This meme was just a list before we got hold of it. ;-)

Well, done. Sorry I didn't tag you on mine, but I was trying to get a representative of every sexual orientation and I already had one of us.

Thank God for Sooguy; he's the only straight guy on my flist. Both flists, actually. ;-)

I saw you tagged [livejournal.com profile] sooguy. Heh. It's a small, small world, ain't it.

I sense a theme. ;)

There were only two that surprised me on this list. First, Rawhide/Clancy Brown just because I had no idea he appealed to you. (What no Sword! or weapon) BTW I can't stop picturing him with his throat slashed in Highlander. Second was Teyla Emmagan, not because I didn't think you would have a girl crush, just because I don't know who she is.

I was tagged to this meme by [livejournal.com profile] storm_grant, but haven't even thought about it yet. I am afraid my list will end up looking to peervy or something.

I lurv lurv lurv Clancy Brown. This is a problem, 'cause even when he's playing a villain I keep thinking "It's Clancy! I can't hate Clancy!"

As for Teyla, she's in Stargate: Atlantis, a show in which the Sweetie and I have dueling girl crushes. He's got the hots for Elizabeth Weir; I think Teyla's awesome.

I love your list. You really went outside the norm (though it was no surprise to see Doyle, Illya, Sharpe and Boromir make appearances). I love Clancy Brown, though don't know him from Buckaroo Bonzai. I'm getting such a kick out of the scruff working for you as well as it obviously does. :-)

In doing this, I've discovered I'm attracted to geeks. It's the competency thing you touched on. I almost put Rodney McKay on the list, not because I'm physically attracted to the actor, but I love his mix of smarts, ego and vulnerability.

As for girl crushes--I couldn't think of a single female character who does it for me. But my sis and I have often confessed--we'd be gay for Angelina Jolie. *g*

Ya know, I could have done an entirely predictable list, but I thought what the heck, why not go a bit deeper and put up some of my longtime crushes. (As for scruff, heck, I married a scruff. It's definitely a look that works for me.)

I have to admit to seriously loving the geeks (Illya!) though not always in a lusting sort of way. And Rodney in one of the major things that has kept both me and the Sweetie watching SGA. I know Hewlett from way back when he was doing the Canadian show Traders, which actually got me to stop watching ER. The Sweetie knows him from countless crazy Canadian indie films.

I have to admit, I don't usually get girl crushes (I'm pretty darn close to a 1 on the Kinsey scale) but Teyla rocks my world. Actually, come to think of it, so does Teresa, Sharpe's first wife, the kickass Spanish guerilla fighter.

Bugger, wish I'd thought of this LOL It's a great idea, illustrating them.

Oh well.

I love Vila and Avon both. Vila has these sweet, touches that always seem poignant, whilst Darrow plays Avon with a kind of evil 'goodness' - gosh is that a contradiction in terms! Sorry!

Pulling the pictures together was half the fun. Glad I saw [livejournal.com profile] ancastar had done it.

I'm so glad to hear others like Avon and Vila. Vila always seemed sadly underestimated to me, which is, of course, part of his charm. As for Avon, he's so determined to be a villain and yet so often finds himself doing good against his better judgment. He's just so delicious as a character, and Darrow clearly had a blast playing him.

So glad to see Doyle at the top of your list. ;) Although Sean Bean is rather lovely too. Scruffy with big swords seems to be your thing. *bg*

Doyle has been at or near the top of my list for a very long time now. *g*

Scruffy with big swords seems to be your thing.

Well, ya know. I married a scruffy guy. And I own several swords. It's all of a piece.

Wished we could have a drink together, Pauline- we certainly seem to like the same types of men! Athos- Oliver Reed was just so brilliant in that movie (and not only there) A short while ago the movies were on TV here agin and I just realized how quick and with what an energy and force he moved in the fighting scenes. When I googled on him I found aout he was severly injured during the filming of it (knife cut to the throat)! I guess he jumped into the knife of some unlucky stand man, before he knew it... Must have been a real wild guy, the man.
It seems to me as if there were links to the four musketeers and LOTR: If you are the Athos girl, you are the Boromir girl, too. Faramir/Aramis, D'artagnon/Aragorn? And Portos? Hm. An interesting linst, thanks for sharing.

Ah and to Nick Cave singing "Wild roses" with Blixa. I always thought it would be fun if two guys would singing it, that they actually have done that, brilliant. I heard some tracks of the hew album and I like it.

If I ever make it back to Germany, or you make it to Canada, we definitely must have a drink together. (Clearly you have great taste. *g*)

I watched the Musketeer movies every time they were on TV as a kid, and still love them to this day. D'Artagnan may have been the prettiest, but it was always Athos that attracted my interest. His world-weariness and obvious smarts interested me even at age ten. And it was definitely Oliver Reed at the peak of his powers. I'm not surprised to hear he was injured during filming. The fights are extremely dirty, yet another reason I love them. (They fight the way you would fight if your life depended on it.)

Love the LotR comparisons. Hmmm, perhaps Porthos/Gimli? Though Gimli isn't quite enough of a clothes horse.

I haven't heard the new Nick Cave yet, but we'll definitely be getting it ASAP. I'll miss Blixa being in the Bad Seeds, though. He and Nick performing together is a wonderful thing, even minus the Wild Roses duet.

Damn, Honey... I love you.

Right back atcha!

We really should have met sooner. And started hanging out more often way before now.

Speaking of which, do you want to try and do a fun night next week? I'm finishing off a story this week, but it's due in a week (by which time I'll either have finished it off or it'll have finished me off) so I should be ready for some fun. I've got class Tuesday and acupuncture Wednesday. And Don is going to see Art Spiegelman (with John, I think) on Thursday. That leaves Monday or Friday.

It's a date!

Leatherheads opens that day, and it looks like a fun take on the screwball comedy. Or there's the Bank Job, with the always yummy Jason Statham.
