Had a great practice today. The kids had fun and they were rocking the passing. The game itself was fun, but a bit less successful: final score: 4 - 8, and not for us, alas. The 4 points were all from the same kid. He's quiet and intense and really loves playing the game. Which is good, because he was in the final lineup for the evening and his three teammates completely lost interest in the game and were chasing each other around the wrong end of the field, leaving him to take on the opposing four players by himself. Which he totally did.

Ros is doing okay, but I swear she overthinks the dribbling more and more every week. My mission this week is to just get her kicking a ball around the park so she isn't carefully considering where she's going to put her foot every time she gets hold of the ball. (Her form is impeccable, but she's four times slower than all the other kids. Which I know, because I had them run the field with their balls as a warm up and she did one length in the time the other kids did four. ::sigh::)

In other news, my mom was visiting this weekend, which was lovely, and I took her to see the local production of War Horse on Sunday. The show was every bit as good as the NT version in London, minus a couple of dodgy accents. (Canadians should not be allowed to do Welsh accents. I'm just sayin'.) But man, that audience had hearts of stone. When I saw it in London, the entire auditorium was openly weeping at the end, but the Toronto audience...wasn't. There were a few discreetly dabbed eyes, and a very enthusiastic standing ovation, but you could tell the story didn't have the same resonance for this audience that it did for an English one. Interesting... (For the record, I was a total mess from the opening scenes of the show, benefit of knowing what was coming.)

Also, I've broken 14,000 words on the Pros Big Bang story, well over the rough draft limit. Yay! I was beginning to think that I might get a complete draft done in the next week or two, but then I sat down and mapped out the rest of the story and realized that there's 15 to 18 scenes to go. At 1,000 words a scene, that means I'm going to hit around 30,000 words again, and that's not getting done in the next week. But still, it's well on the way.

and his four teammates completely lost interest in the game and were chasing each other around the wrong end of the field How I love that throwaway detail that says so much..*g*

I haven't even gone near War Horse, as I know I will be a blubbery mess throughout the whole damn thing - interesting to hear about the difference audience reatcions there.

And go you for the BB!!!!!! Wow, that's an enviable worrd count ( I think I'm going to write sex scenes until Sunday to get to the rough draft minimum and then fill in the plot later - that'll work, right???)

At this age, the soccer coaching is as much about making sure they don't make mud puddles with their water bottles as it is about teaching soccer skills. Which is part of the fun, really.

War Horse will totally make you a blubbery mess, but it's also astoundingly good.

The BB word count is coming along, but I'm also at the "wow, this might be total crap" stage. Sex scenes to get to the rough draft minimum seems a reasonable strategy to me. *g*

Good to hear your healthy BB wordcount :) 'Well on its way' is excellent news!

Re War Horse, did you see this?

The word count is coming along, Now I just have to make sure it isn't crap. :-/

I'd heard about the War Horse on top of the National for the Jubilee, but hadn't seen it. Thanks for the link!

Ah, the joys of coaching the very young.*g* I love these reports of yours, you know! I do hope you can get Ros to not overthink it. That's a problem that really can persist, and it can suck the joy right out. Good luck!

Yay for 14,000 words! I am totally envious! At this point, I have no idea how long mine will turn out to be, but I'm thinking maybe around the 20,000 mark. Which is a scary thought, considering I'm still in the 6000, so I'm not going to think about it! So, hey, thank goodness we actually have a couple of months! *g*

I stress about the soccer games every week--especially trying to find drills that won't descend into chaos--but then quite enjoy the actual games. Pretty much from day one we called Ros thinky baby, so the overthinking is definitely an essential part of her personality. I'm going to take the martial arts route and just get her to practice over and over until the movements are things she doesn't have to think about. All without her getting bored, of course. ;-)

6,000 words is great! And if you're aiming for 20,000, you might actually have fewer words to the end than I do, if that makes you feel any better. (I'm going to try writing like the wind, since I've also got another BB with an even earlier deadline to get going on. Yikes!)

Oh how lovely to see War Horse again! I really want to see that in London a second time. SO much better than the film.

Yay for 14k! Well done you *g* I realised, like last year, that my story needed kind of disassembling and reassembling with the same stuff in a different order, more or less, and that seems to be adding words which is good. I reckon mine might end up at 20k when all's said and done, but we'll see. Over the minimum, anyway. It's the summary that's bugging me!

The play is really wonderful. Though it wouldn't be hurt by the addition of slashy Cumberbatch and Hiddleston. *g*

Yay for you being over the minimum! Though I have to say, having to gut a story and redo it is never a fun thing, even if it's sometime necessary. Glad it's ticking along, though. My strategy for dealing with the summary at the moment is avoidance. I hate writing summaries. When I have to do one for AO3 half the time I just pull the first line and call it sorted, which I don't think is going to work for the BB story. :-/

I hope the strategy with Ros works. I think it's part of how a lot of kids end up dropping out of sports, that they can't just let go and let loose.

\o/ for the word count. There you go, romping over the rough draft deadline.

Last year Ros would just run down the field with the ball and was pretty good at tackling too, so I know she's got it in her. If I can just get her to stop overthinking it, she'll be fine. Of course, she's an overthinking kind of kid, so it's going to be an interesting battle.

I don't know that I've exactly romped over the deadline, but at least I won't be down to the wire this year.
