Since I missed my Thursday Tae Kwan Do class (was knackered after staying up too late going through the film fest program book) I thought I'd go for a run with a co-worker at lunch time. I carefully took my Ventolin before the run, and took a break when I could feel my asthma coming on, but I did pretty good. I even had enough gas in the tank to sprint the last 50 m.

And then my scalp got itchy, and my face swelled up, and my throat started closing down, and I had to take my Epipen on the street while my co-worker worriedly looked on. And then another co-worker drove me to the E.R., where they stuck an IV in my arm, attached me to a heart monitor, and then made me stay in the hospital for four hours. (I finished the book I was reading, and then took a nap for the rest of the afternoon.)

I want a new body. Seriously. (Who the heck is allergic to running?!)

::sigh::

I'm still a bit loopy from the drugs, but I'm more annoyed that this has happened yet again. Grrrr.

I'm very glad you're okay.

We had our first red air-quality day in years here today. I forbade Hubs from walking the 1.5 miles home from the tire shop should they have his replacement tire in stock and be able to do the fix today, because he's been fighting his allergies for two weeks already and I didn't think he ought to spend the weekend incapacitated. (As it was they had to order the tire.) I think you may be more allergic to the air than the exercise, but damn, that's good excuse!

Thanks.

Sounds like you made a good call with the hubby. The air no doubt contributed to the problem--it was a hot, muggy day, though not overly oppressive--but I had the same thing happen in the winter during an inside martial arts class. That time I exercised hard enough to kick off my asthma, so I've been very careful not to push myself to that point again. But apparently I don't need to anymore.

Most annoying.

Once I hit 40, I started having asthma problems when I did any sort of exertion outdoors if the temps were below around 40° F (4.5° C). We're talking burning lungs for 24 hours or more. I hate to be grateful for Daughter's asthma for any reason, but it means I have an emergency inhaler in my possession.

Luckily heat and bad air-quality don't seem to bother me (yet) (touch wood.) But I'm so very not fond of exercising in heat and humidity that I tend to head straight for the indoor track if it looks like I need to be walking when it's more than 80° F out or I know the pollen-counts are high.

I got officially diagnosed with asthma in my late twenties when this whole allergic reaction thing kicked off. (Looking back on when I was a kid I suspect I always had asthma, but put the burning lungs/wheezing when I exercised thing down to just not being in good enough shape.)

I'd say heading to the indoor track when heat, humidity, and pollen are an issue only makes sense.

Who the heck is allergic to running?!)

I am :)

Seriously, glad you're ok. That's scary.

Not that kind of allergic. ;-)

Thanks. Since I've been having these reactions for the better party of 20 years now, I find it more annoying than scary. But I definitely freaked out the gals at work.

Maybe something you breathed in while running? Glad you're OK and hope you can work out what caused it so that you can stay safe in future!

Exercise-induced asthma and angioedema (the swelling) is actually a known thing. A weird thing, but something that can happen. I just wish it didn't happen to me.

I knew that, because when I was teaching there were kids we had to watch carefully (and always have inhalers etc. with us) but I'm surprised it has suddenly hit you like this as an adult. What a shame!

Since it started this year I've been careful and always use my inhaler before I exercise and I don't push myself to the point where the asthma starts, but apparently that's not enough anymore. This is most irritating. Hmmph.

Urgh that sounds awful. It must be so frustrating (not to mention scarifying) when it happens. Did the hospital/doctor hazard a theory as to why it happened this particular time - ie pollution, pollen, exercise? Hope you're feeling better now.

Exercise is known to induce asthma and angioedema (the swelling thing). Though I don't think anyone knows the exact mechanism as to how it work. It's definitely frustrating, though at least I got over the scarifying part after the first five times it happened.

Thanks for the good thoughts.

Bloody hell, P! That is no fun at all. I hope you're feeling better now. What the hell is it about running that set your body off like that??

It's a big pile of no fun. Exercise is known to induce asthma and angioedema (the swelling) but I don't think anyone knows why exactly. I'm just one of the lucky ones. :-/

Eurgh! *hugs* How totally bloody rubbish. How long until we can abandon our bodies and use robot avatars, eh? I really hope this is the last one for a long, long, long time (or, you know, whilst I'm wishing, the last one *ever*). Feel much better honey ♥

Definitely bloody rubbish. Also irksome. I'm definitely all in favour of robot avatars. That would be awesome.

Also, fingers crossed I'm done with this for a long time. But I'm still not going anywhere without my epipen.

Take care of yourself, or else!

It's certainly not the most fun I've ever had. I'm glad I had a book, but I do wish I'd had more than twenty pages left in the bloody thing. Ah well, napping in E.R. was also time well spent.

Shall do my best to take care of myself.

Eep! Glad to hear you're OK Petal. Scary stuff <3

FTR - I am allergic to exercise, although it's more self-inflicted than medical in my case... *g*

Thanks. I'm really, really getting sick of this. (The only positive side is my boss now has first hand reports of what I look like when this happens so if I call in sick with it again she'll definitely know I'm not skiving. *g*)

As for your allergy. hee! (I'm sort of the opposite. I love working out, in certain ways, anyway. Which makes this all the more irksome.)

Thanks. The swelling's finally down, and now I'm just wondering who I need to see about the obviously shoddy workmanship on my immune system. Silly thing, attacking itself.
