Since I missed my Thursday Tae Kwan Do class (was knackered after staying up too late going through the film fest program book) I thought I'd go for a run with a co-worker at lunch time. I carefully took my Ventolin before the run, and took a break when I could feel my asthma coming on, but I did pretty good. I even had enough gas in the tank to sprint the last 50 m.

And then my scalp got itchy, and my face swelled up, and my throat started closing down, and I had to take my Epipen on the street while my co-worker worriedly looked on. And then another co-worker drove me to the E.R., where they stuck an IV in my arm, attached me to a heart monitor, and then made me stay in the hospital for four hours. (I finished the book I was reading, and then took a nap for the rest of the afternoon.)

I want a new body. Seriously. (Who the heck is allergic to running?!)

::sigh::

Thanks.

Sounds like you made a good call with the hubby. The air no doubt contributed to the problem--it was a hot, muggy day, though not overly oppressive--but I had the same thing happen in the winter during an inside martial arts class. That time I exercised hard enough to kick off my asthma, so I've been very careful not to push myself to that point again. But apparently I don't need to anymore.

Most annoying.

Once I hit 40, I started having asthma problems when I did any sort of exertion outdoors if the temps were below around 40° F (4.5° C). We're talking burning lungs for 24 hours or more. I hate to be grateful for Daughter's asthma for any reason, but it means I have an emergency inhaler in my possession.

Luckily heat and bad air-quality don't seem to bother me (yet) (touch wood.) But I'm so very not fond of exercising in heat and humidity that I tend to head straight for the indoor track if it looks like I need to be walking when it's more than 80° F out or I know the pollen-counts are high.

I got officially diagnosed with asthma in my late twenties when this whole allergic reaction thing kicked off. (Looking back on when I was a kid I suspect I always had asthma, but put the burning lungs/wheezing when I exercised thing down to just not being in good enough shape.)

I'd say heading to the indoor track when heat, humidity, and pollen are an issue only makes sense.
