Bill C-38

Tonight I watched on T.V. as a bunch of mostly middle-aged men and (far too few) women stood up as their names were called. And it was absolutely rivetting. Why? Because Bill C-38, the bill that legalizes same sex marriages in Canada at a federal level has just passed.

Let there be rejoicing!

(It still has to go through the Senate, but I'm hoping that's a mere formality at this point.)

Oh, Canada!

How I wish the US had half your heart.

I'm hopeful the tide will turn in your country. I just hope it's soon.

One thing that gives me faint hope is that Dubya's approval ratings keep dropping. Same with several of the senior Republican House and Senate members. Maybe people are finally starting to wake the h-e-double-hockey-sticks up.

Go Canada!

I was already celebrating! I think it will make Canada Day all that more special this year.

I can't believe the shit that has come out of Harper's mouth in the past week. The Bloc was a good enough ally for the Conservatives when it came to trying to defeat the gov't, but the minute the Bloc side with the Liberals over C-38, they are suddenly evil sepratists.

I am just waiting for the Hansard minutes to be posted so I can check my MP's voting record. I am hoping he had a last minute change of heart and voted with his party, but he's been very vocal about his stance against same sex marriage. Otherwise I'll be doing everything in my power to get him defeated in the next election.

I turned on the voting in time to see our M.P., Maria Minna, stand up for the bill. She's pretty much stood by the legislation all the way through, thankfully.

I was doing the happy dance as the roll was called. Except when I was booing the Conservatives, that is. (I'm just hoping the everyone realizes what an utter twat Harper is after this.)

My hat's off to you and your progressive country. Congratulations!

We're not always as progressive as I'd like, but we're getting there.

Are you in one of the more liberal areas/provinces? I'm glad that I live in a "blue state" so I can claim no responsibility for our last Presidential election. I mean, Hilary Clinton, vilified enemy of conservatives, is my senator.

I'm right in downtown Toronto, home of one of the biggest Pride celebrations in the world, so yeah, you could say we're liberal. However, Toronto is surrounded by a big swath of suburbia that is as staunchly conservative as Toronto is liberal.

Mind you, even our Conservatives aren't a patch on your Republicans when it comes to right-wing nutiness, so it's all relative.

This is such fabulous news!

(I really do worry about people who don't know what a twerp Harper is.)

Every time Harper does something stupid and bigotted, I applaud. I'm hoping he manages to alienate the whole darn country before the next election.

*snickers* With all the time he's spending in Quebec these days, it's only a matter of time!

The whole Quebec thing is getting amusing, what with him telling the citizens of Quebec that the votes of their M.P.s aren't legitimate yesterday. Or at least not when they're supporting Bill C-38.

Keep it up, Stevie. At this rate, you may even manage to get Alberta ticked off at you. ;)

And he's been trying to get a toe-hold here since forever (all the "alliance" incarnations did).
The way he talks, he's not getting it anytime soon : Qc is not interested (I hope!)

I was so happy to hear this; it must be wonderful to live in a free country. All we got yesterday was viewing interruption by the moron in charge.
