Christmas and the holiday season have managed to be both relaxing and yet full of activity, so I haven't read much in Yuletide beyond my gift stories. But those stories are glorious.

I got one main gift and two treats. Two were for Point Break, a movie that is very dear to my heart, and one was for Wings of Desire which is in my top five movies of all time list, and all of the stories managed to have moments that brought out aspects of the characters I hadn't considered.

Drop Zone (5278 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Point Break (1991)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Bodhi (Point Break)/Johnny Utah
Characters: Johnny Utah, Bodhi
Summary: "This is what it's about, Johnny. Finding your limits, going past them."

The limits in question are sexual in nature, and this story is a fantastic example of using a sex scene to explore character.

exist on a different plane. (1817 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Point Break (1991)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Bodhi (Point Break)/Johnny Utah, Johnny Utah/Tyler
Characters: Johnny Utah, Bodhi, Tyler
Additional Tags: Missing Scene, Summer, Surfing, Canon Compliant, Yuletide Treat
Summary: Bodhi claps him on the shoulder, his arm lingering for a moment. “You alright, man? Penny for your deep thoughts.”
Johnny laughs, self-deprecatingly. “They’re not that deep. Just feeling sorry for myself.”

More sex, more exploration of the characters, this time using the surfing that brought the characters together in the first place. It's quite breath-taking.

Heartbeat (524 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Der Himmel über Berlin | Wings of Desire (1987)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Cassiel (Der Himmel über Berlin)/Damiel, Cassiel (Der Himmel über Berlin)/MOC
Characters: Cassiel (Der Himmel über Berlin)
Additional Tags: hinted at relationships, Angels
Summary: Damiel longed for the world, but what does Cassiel long for?

A short piece from Cassiel's POV, giving him a much more satisfying reason for becoming human than the actual sequel to Wings of Desire did. There's an added cameo from Nick Cave, which is always a good thing.

It's awesome that you're going to write a story in one of the fandoms I requested. Basically, I hope you write a story that you can have fun with, because Yuletide should be fun. But to give you an idea of the sort of story I enjoy, what follows are some of my likes and dislikes, as well as my original prompts.

This way to the details )

Yesterday was spent doing some de-cluttering in the house and getting the [livejournal.com profile] takethatslash Secret Santa sorted, but now that everything's under control, I thought I'd do my Yuletide reveal and a wrap-up of my 2012 fic.

For Yuletide, I was matched on Haywire, a film I love for its kickass heroine, Mallory Kane, and its really top-notch fight scenes. The first thing my recipient's Dear Yulegoat letter listed as a like was, and I quote, "WOMEN BEING AWESOME." Which led to a little story about Mallory protecting, and training, two very different women. It's not my usual run of things, but I'm pretty happy with it.

The Diner Rules (4523 words)
Fandom: Haywire (2011)

Massive thanks goes to [livejournal.com profile] shayheyred for doing a fantastic beta on this story.

Besides Yuletide, I wrote 12 other stories: 11 Take That RPS, 1 Take That/Wings of Desire crossover, and my monster Pros/TT/zombie crossover. Here are the links: )

I got a treat this year (yay!) but have been too swamped to mention it until now. So I thought I'd slip in a rec just before the reveal.

Architects of Decay is a Withnail & I story. It's a perfect Marwood character piece, and really captures the ambivilence of his relationship with Withnail. If you love the movie, you must read it.

I got three really fantastic Yuletide stories this year, and loved them all.

First up is a Withnail and I character study, and it perfectly matches the more melancholy atmosphere of the movie.

Architects of Decay (1083 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Withnail & I (1986)
Summary: It's Christmas Eve and everything remains exactly the same.

The other two are Take That, starting with an SF one set in the Kidz universe, with a wily, peace-mongering Mark.

There'll Be Trouble (2978 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Take That
Relationships: Mark Owen/Robbie Williams
Summary: When Mark gets kidnapped on a peace mission by a less-than-peaceful Council, the others have to come up with a solution.

The second TT story is utterly fantastic, angsty wingfic, and that's all I'm going to say because discovering the workings of this world is half the beauty of it.

Or You'll Find Yourself Floating Home (3199 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Take That
Relationships: OT5 - Relationship, Mark Owen/Robbie Williams, Howard Donald/Jason Orange
Summary: 'Gary steps forward slowly; it’s August, August 1995, the hottest damn summer in a decade, and the air is humid and thick with fumes – his eyes are stinging. The shape sitting on the edge of the roof wavers when he first sees it – he has enough time to think he’s imagining things - that he’s too late and that this sight is only wishful thinking. But Rob is there. Rob is sitting on the edge, fifty-one storeys up, shirt off, his tattered wings opening and closing with a nervous twitch and looking about as strong as rice-paper.'

My assignment is for the fandom I added at the last minute because I thought it might be cool.

It will be cool, but in the meantime it's also a little terrifying. On the positive side, my recipient's Dear Yulegoat letter has asked for exactly the same kind of story I like myself, so yay!

The Sweetie is also chuffed about the assignment because he's keen on watching the source again, so there will not doubt be several viewings of the source material in the next few weeks.

Was very excited to get my Yuletide assignment last night, though it did stress me out a bit. It's a fandom I've wanted to write in for years, but I've never been sure I could do it justice.

But this morning my muse kicked loose a scene and a structure, and now the sucker is at 600 words and counting. Huzzah!

Yuletide was a lovely experience again this year, though things have been hectic enough that I've only had a chance to read a very few stories. I did want to highlight my gift story, though.

The fandom I sort of most wanted a story in was Legion. Yes, it's kind of a silly movie that makes no sense, but it has a buff Paul Bettany as a kickass angel, and a huge potential for archangel slash with Bettany's Michael and Kevin Durand's Gabriel. My writer did in fact write a Legion story, and a pretty fantastic one at that.

let all mortal flesh (1204 words) by faviconCarmilla
Fandom: Legion (2010)
Relationships: Gabriel/Michael

let all mortal flesh follows Michael and Gabriel from creation to the end of the film, and beyond. The writing is elegant, the slash isn't explicit but is beautifully wrought, and it has a training sequence:

Michael would demonstrate a movement and then watch as Gabriel imitated him. And if it was right, he would nod, and command, Again. (And again, and again, until the movement was seated deep down in his body, well beyond any conscious thought.) If it was not right, Michael would place his hands on Gabriel, and, firmly and infinitely slowly, make him move as he should.

I absolutely adore training sequences--good training sequence can be something akin to both dance and sex--and this is a lovely example thereof. The whole story is wonderful, and I highly recommend it.

The story I wrote is this one:

Down a Dark Desert Highway (1677 words) by faviconPR Zed
Fandom: A Knight's Tale (2001), Hotel California - The Eagles (Song)
Relationships: Geoffrey Chaucer/William Thatcher

Yep, that's a crossover between A Knight's Tale and Hotel California. I'd offered A Knight's Tale, and when I saw the song in my recipients list of requests, my first thought was "how ever would you write a story based on that?" But then I had an image of Geoffrey Chaucer stuck for eternity in the hotel and it just sort of wrote itself. [livejournal.com profile] shayheyred did her usual bang up betaing job and made the whole thing better.

And just for fun, here's one, very belated, Yuletide rec:

Ship Song (Der Himmel Uber Berlin Remix) (4986 words) by faviconkenaz
Fandom: Good Omens - Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett, wings of desire
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Aziraphale/Crowley
Characters: Aziraphale, Crowley (Good Omens), Nick Cave, Blixa Bargeld, Peter Falk

It was the second year in a row I request a Wings of Desire fic, preferably with Nick Cave, to no avail, so I decided to see what else might be in the archive for the fandom. This story dates from Yuletide 2009, and may not have been written to my prompts, but it is my platonic ideal of a Wings of Desire fic. Not only does it have Nick, but also Blixa Bargeld, and Aziraphale and Crowley from Good Omens. Fabulous!

p.s. It has occurred to me that I've gone from being the sort of person who thinks wingfic is a bit silly to being the sort of person who requests two fandoms with angels for Yuletide. Hmmm.

I've been mulling over a story idea since I got my Yuletide assignment, so today I took advantage of having nothing on my plate at work and started it. And somehow I also finished it.

It will no doubt need some tweaking, and it definitely needs a title, but barring my beta telling me it's crap, I should be done in the next day or so.

Cool.

Now maybe I can make some progress on the UNCLE story I've been agonizing over for-bleeding-ever...

It's been a busy holiday, what with hanging with Ros and the Sweetie, and family obligations, and applying for jobs and stuff, so I haven't had time to read much of the Yuletide bounty. But I did want to give a shout out to the two wonderful authors who wrote my gifts, and to point to the stories I wrote for anyone interested.

The first of my gift stories was The Return of the Black Sheep, a lovely little Black Sheep Squadron vignette concentrating on Pappy and Gutterman. This was the fandom that convinced me to sign up for Yuletide in the first place. The thought of getting a story with Gutterman was too tempting. The story is set after the ep Last One for Hutch, and it's a nice character piece.

The second gift story was Got Tired of Waiting. It's Top Gear RPS, Richard/James, and it is genius! Genius, I tell you! It's set during the lorry episode, which I adore, and the voices are perfect. It's funny and hot and I adore it. If you like Top Gear, you must read this story.

I wrote two stories, one for my assigned recipient, and one Yuletide Madness story.

The assigned one was And the Sky to Sleep Under, a Tombstone story with Doc/Wyatt h/c slash. I've always adore the movie, loved the relationship between Doc and Wyatt, and I'm rather pleased with how this turned out.

The second story was A Moment of Clarity, a Buckaroo Banzai triple drabble from Rawhide's POV. I lurv Rawhide, have always wanted to slash him and Buckaroo, and it was fun to finally stick my toe in the fandom. I may just have to write a longer story with the two of them at some point.

I'm hoping at some point I'll have time to read some more and maybe even do a rec post.
