Just got back from a visit to the emergency room in Sault Ste. Marie. We're here visiting Don's family mostly but stopped in tonight to see a cousin of mine and his family. He has two girls, 3 and 6, and they all seemed to be getting along well. We thought nothing of it when the girls took off to their bedroom with Ros,not realizing there was a bunkbed. The next thing we know there's a thud, and Ros is hysterical and we're on our way to hospital.

The doctor was very nice, and couldn't see a break in the x-rays, but put a cast on Ros' foot anyway because there might be a break in a bone plate(one of the still forming sections of bone in a little kid's body which unfortunately doesn't show up in x-rays.)

It's going to be an interesting 5 days keeping Ros from walking on the cast until we can see her doctor. Tomorrow ww're going to try and track down a set of mini crutches so she can be a little mobile.

Bugger but I'm sorry to read this. *Hugs you*

I know how scary this sort of thing has to be and good luck with keeping her still.

Well, for the first two days Ros would break into tears every time we told her she couldn't walk on the cast, but she's adjusted. And here's hoping her doctor let's us get away without a cast when we see her tomorrrow.

Yeouch, the poor little bugger. I hope there's no broken bones and she'll get rid of the cast quickly.

Fingers crossed on the broken bones front. We see her doctor tomorrow and are hoping we get away with no more than a walking cast. And hopefully no cast at all.

Aw poor kid :( and boo hiss to dumb accidents. By tomorrow it probably won't even hurt and the worst will be the itching. When I broke my leg on the ski tow rope (yes I said ski tow rope!) in 2nd grade it took 2 weeks before kid size crutches were available. I also once broke a bone on the side of my foot getting out of bed and promised to stay off it and use crutches to avoid having a cast put on. Also broke my arm and my wrist so I hate casts!

Hey to Soo, Ontario *waves*. I was born and raised in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan and back in high school use to go with me best mate on the bus over the International Bridge (no passports needed back then in the 70's) to go shopping in an indoor mall and to McDonalds because we didn't have those things in our much smaller Soo. My dad was also a customs inspector so we tried to go when he was working both so he knew we were back safe and maybe to avoid the duty *g* (not that we ever bought much, just the shopping was fun and the exchange rate was in our favor *hee*)

We tried all over the Soo and Parry Sound for kids' crutches, with no luck. We're now holding off in the hopes that her doctor will tell us she doesn't need a cast tomorrow.

The Sweetie is from the Soo, hence the visit. Lots of his family to see, along with my cousin. (I'm from Parry Sound, which isn't nearly so far north, but is much much smaller.)

Eeep! Poor Ros, and poor you, too.

I hope you find a set a mini crutches superfast.

*hugs to all*

The mini crutches were nowhere to be found. Now we're just hoping her doctor tells us there are no broken bones and no cast needed when we see her tomorrow.

Don't let the Earthling near bunk beds! They are evil!

*grim*

One of the earthling's cousins has bunk beds. And the earthling loves to climb. I have a bad feeling about this.

How did the doctor visit go? And, wow, how have you kept Ros OFF her feet for five days?

Date: 2009-08-05 01:33 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com
Watch him like a hawk around the bunk beds. And if you can get the cousin's parents to remove the ladder while you're visiting, I'd strongly advise it. (Apparently my cousin always takes the ladder down while there are little visitors but he forgot when we were there.)

The doctor's visit did not go as well as expected. She can't refer us to the ortho clinic until she gets the report from the hospital up north, and they didn't give us the report when we asked. So now the doctor's receptionist has to chase them down.

The going off the feet thing is going okay, though the first two days she'd break into tears when we reminded her she couldn't walk on the cast. All in all, I'm going to be very glad when this is all over.

Oh, poor you guys! Hope Ros' foot turns out to be okay (bet it will, they're bouncy little things, bairns, right?) and that she gets up to much mischief with her mini-crutches rather than being too worried by it...

There were no mini-crutches to be found, but Ros has gotten quite good at scrambling about with the cast.

We've just got our fingers crossed that her doctor tells us we don't need a cast when we see her tomorrow.

She hasn't been in pain since the first day, so we have our fingers crossed that there's nothing broken. We find out for sure at her doctor tomorrow.

Ouch, I'm sorry to hear this and bunkbeds are evil ...
Good luck with keeping Rose off her foot and to get a right set of crutches.
I hope, there isn't actually a bone broken and she can get rid of the cast soon.

She's been overly sensitive (breaking into tears at the slightest provocation) but has been handling the cast relatively well otherwise. Here's hoping we'll have seen the last of the cast tomorrow.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this.

The poor thing - and I can imagine how scary it must have been for all of you. Good luck with keeping her still!

It was most upsetting, but we're all handling it pretty well now. Now we just have to see her doctor and get the final decision on whether she still needs a cast.

Eeep! A few scary moments, though I'm sure Ros will bounce back (and enjoy the drama) much more quickly than you and Don.

From: [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com
She's mostly been okay, though she's become a bit of a drama queen if things don't go her way. And Don and I are developing wicked arm muscles, lugging her and the cast around. (I think the cast weighs as much as she does.)

Ouch! for Ros and a big ouch! for you too. In my experience, it's always much harder on the parents. Something very similar happened to my son at probably a very similar age and whilst the doctor decided he didn't need a cast THAT time, he'd already broken his arm and had a whole other catalogue of A&E visits under his belt *sigh*. She will be fine - they bounce back and adapt remarkably quickly at this age, and she will take it all in her stride, and don't be surprised if in 5 days they decide she doesn't need the cast any more.

Good luck with the keeping off the cast thing ;)

*hugs you*

Well, she's already figured out how to get around in the cast. Now we're just really hoping that her doctor decides it was a sprain and we don't need the cast any more. Fingers crossed.

Oh, no. I hope that foot is healed up soon. Ain't mothering and fathering fun? *g*

Take care, both of you.

It doesn't seem to be hurting her anymore, so we're hoping the cast comes off when we see her doctor tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for us, will ya?

Yeah, the fun just never stops when you're a parent, huh? :) When my son was five and needed cosmetic repair of a partial cleft lip the plastic surgeon told me that after the surgery. I'd have to keep him out of the sun. For the whole summer. I wanted to say: "Let me guess -- you don't have any kids, do ya?"

Perhaps if her foot hurts she will want to stay off it willingly. Maybe you could rent a kiddie wheelchair if she's amenable.

This too shall pass.

Date: 2009-08-04 04:47 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com
I'm just envisioning the fun if we have to keep her out of our neighbourhood pools for the rest of the summer. (The darn things just opened up again. Our municipal workers have been on strike the last five weeks.)

Her foot hasn't really hurt much after the first day, so we're hoping it really was just a sprain and they'll take the cast off tomorrow. If not that, a walking cast would be nearly as good.

Sigh.

From: [identity profile] msmoat.livejournal.com
Well, heck, that wasn't supposed to happen! it's inevitable that such things do happen, though--and, yeah, bunk beds are fun, until they're not. *g* I hope Ros both feels better soon and accepts the restrictions. Probably more realistically, I hope you manage to survive the next 5 days!

::Hugs and a pat on the back to send you back into the trenches::

Date: 2009-08-04 04:49 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] przed.livejournal.com
Well, we've survived so far. And Ros sees her doctor tomorrow, so fingers crossed, we're hoping that it was just a sprain and we'll see the end of the cast. Or at least that they replace it with a walking cast.

::hugs much appreciated::

She's been mostly pretty good, though on a hair trigger emotion-wise. (We went out to a concert tonight, and the crying that went on when we left her with the babysitter was truly epic.) Doctor's appointment tomorrow, and we're really hoping we lose the cast.

Oh no!!! Poor Ros - and poor you, having to cope with a Ros that can't move around as much as she wants to. Hope she gets out of the cast quickly.

She's definitely been frustrated by not being able to get around. The first two days she'd burst into tears whenever we reminded her that she couldn't walk on the cast. But she's adjusted and now we're just hoping her doctor gives us good news when we see her tomorrow.

Oh hell's teeth, poor Ros! And poor you having to cope with the shock and the baby in pain (only had to do this a couple of times so far (touch wood), once with each zoic - hate it hate it hate it). I hope she's OK soon, and that it's not long before she can be mobile again {{hugs for all of you}}

Thanks. It was definitely scary, but she's taking it pretty well. Mostly.

We're really hoping that her doctor tells us we can lose the cast. Or at least replaces the current cast with a walking one.

We've mostly recovered. Alas, kids' crutches were nowhere to be found, so we've been lugging Ros around the last four days. On the plus side, my arms have been getting quite the workout.

Now we just have to see Ros' doctor tomorrow. We're hoping it really was just a sprain and we can lose the cast.

Oy! I just saw this now. I hope the little one is on the mend.

And that this hasn't given her a lifelong fear of bunkbeds! :-)

She's still in the cast, but seems okay otherwise. We're just waiting for an appointment with the ortho clinic so they can do a proper assessment. Oy, indeed.

I doubt it'll slow down her climbing any, though. I took her to the park this afternoon, and she wanted me to take her to the monkey bars. Needless to say, I didn't, though I did let her hang from the rings for a bit.
